Sie erscheint in seinen Bildern ausschließlich um ihrer selbst willen. „Farbe ist mir Thema genug“, sagt er und spürt all ihren Reichtum nach, sehr wohl wissend, dass ihr Reich durch Malerei zwar betreten, jedoch weder praktisch noch theoretisch ausgeschöpft werden kann. Was aber bedeutet Verdichtung der Farbe zum Organismus? Zunächst, und durchaus wörtlich, die kontinuierliche Anhäufung oder Schichtung von gebundenen Pigmenten auf einem Träger, auf Papier, Fließ oder Leinwand während des Malprozesses. Da die verschiedenen Schichten die jeweils darunter liegenden nicht vollständig verdecken, sondern entweder partiell stehen oder durchscheinen lassen, bleibt das Kontinuum der Verdichtung optisch nachvollziehbar. Dies setzt eine differenzierte Misch- und Lasurtechnik, einen erfahrenen Umgang mit Binde- und Lösemitteln voraus. Doch auch der von Graubner gewählte Trägerstoff selbst, beispielsweise Fließpapier, oder, wie im Falle der „Farbraumkörper“, mit Synthetikwatte voluminös hinterfütterte und weich den Spannrahmen umfassende Leinwand, ist in Schichten angelegt, in welche die flüssige Farbe einsickern und somit zugleich aus der Tiefe an der Oberfläche des licht- und luftdurchlässigen Bildes ihre Wirkung entfalten kann.“ (Uwe Wieczorek (Hg.), Gotthard Graubner, Malerei, Painting, Ausst.Kat. It is exclusively self-referential in his work. “Colour is subject matter enough for me”, he says, pursuing the richness of its realm, knowing full well that painting may make forays into that realm but can never exhaust it, in practice or in theory. What does the condensation of colour into an organism actually mean? Literally: the steady application or layering of bound pigments on a support, on paper or canvas in the course of the painting process. Since each layer will not necessarily be entirely covered by the next, the continuum of the condensation can be traced in areas of the painting that may remain unchanged or shine through. Prerequisite to this approach is sophisticated mastery of mixing paints, of colour washes and of working with binders and solvents. But even the supports themselves are layered, for instance, unsized paper or the vehicle the artist has devised for his Farbraumkörper, a voluminous layer of synthetic cotton that softly covers the stretcher behind the canvas.
