Louis II de Bourbon-Condé (1621-1686), known as "le Grand Condé", was a French prince and cousin of King Louis XIV. Although he initially distinguished himself as a French general during the Thirty Years' War, particularly at the Battle of Rocroi, where he inflicted a heavy defeat on the Spanish armies, he went on to become one of the leading figures in the Fronde movement against Anne of Austria and Cardinal Mazarin. In 1651, he raised troops and wanted to march on Paris, but was slowed down by Turenne, who had remained loyal to Louis XIV, at the Battle of Bléneau in April 1652. Disappointed and condemned to death, he continued to fight in the Netherlands against his cousin's armies under the Spanish banner. He was finally defeated in 1658 at the Battle of the Dunes. Gradually, he regained his cousin's good graces and was able to return to France. He devoted himself to embellishing his château at Chantilly, to which he invited Louis XIV in 1771. This event took on the appearance of a symbolic pardon.
