LARGE 18TH CENTURY OTTOMAN "DIVIT", PROBABLY FROM THE PERIOD OF MAHMOUD I (1730-54). TRAVEL WRITING CASE in silver and chased gilt, consisting of a long rectangular case with a hinged lid. The canted inkwell, its top and bottom frieze and the ends of the pen box are chased with floral decoration. The base of the inkwell is engraved with floral decoration. The tughra of Abdlülmecid (1839-61) adorns the outside of the pen box and the base of the inkwell. Hallmarks, workshop mark "'amel -i Mehmed", and "chechné" on the writing desk, and "Muhammad" mark on the side of the inkwell. The lid is embellished with a garnet stone cabochon and the interior chased with Solomon's Bucket inscribed with the name of the Sleeping Seven of Ephesus. The tughra is difficult to read. (Accidents, dents, wear). Turkey, Ottoman Empire, 18th century, most probably Mahmud I period (1730-54). A SILVER OTTOMAN SCRIBE'S TRAVELLING PENCASE (DIVIT), 18TH CENTURY, PROBABLY PERIOD OF MAHMUD I (1730-54). GROSS WEIGHT. 666 g. - LENGTH. 31,5 CM (12 3/8 IN.) NOTE The 'Amel-i Mehmed' mark is found on divits from the period of Ahmed III (1703-30), Mahmud I (1730-54), Osman III (1754-57) and Mustafa III (1757-74) (Garo Kürkman, Ottoman Silver Marks, Istanbul 1996, pp. 106-07). Solomon's Bucket with the name of the Sleeping Seven of Ephesus adorns certain divits (Kürkman, op.cit., fig. 166, p. 82). The 'Muhammad' mark on the side of the inkwell is recorded by Garo Kürkman on another divit from the time of Mahmud I (Kürkman, op.cit., p. 106).
