Fortunately discovered in 1768, the marble deposits in the Vosges were soon exploited by royal factories, such as the one in Remiremont, and produced granite, also known as green or ashy porphyry, or green serpentine; the stones cut in this way were then sold in Paris through the Magasin ou Dépôt des Ouvrages en roches, consisting of granite, granitelle, jasper, serpentine and porphyry.
Provenance: Former Giuseppe Rossi collection sold in London at Sotheby's on 10, 11 and 12 March 1999.
