Lot no. 179
LARGE METAL WIRE WEAVE Morocco, Saadian period, 17th century Large strip of red, yellow, cream, pink and green silk, also with gold thread, woven with a succession of decorative bands with plant or geometric motifs, including a band of parakeets perched on pomegranate trees, bordered by lines of chevrons, many marks missing, wear, lined with cotton canvas. Size: 81 x 230 cm This large and rare weaving of silk and metallic threads, characterised by alternating geometric, plant and animal registers, is a continuation of Hispano-Moorish silks while reflecting a specifically Maghrebi decorative language. Its composition in horizontal bands recalls the Nasrid lampas of the XIVᵉ century, such as the fragments preserved at the Hispanic Society of America in New York (published in Heather Ecker, Caliphs and Kings, the Art and Influence of Islamic Spain, Washington D.C., 2004, no.42, pp.47-49). The motifs of birds facing each other perched on stylised trees, on the other hand, find parallels in the embroidery of Zemmour and in certain rural productions of the Middle Atlas. An example similar to ours was sold at Christie's in London on 7 April 2011 (lot 121). A second example will be presented at the forthcoming Christie's sale in London on 30 October 2025 (lot 14). A Rare Saadien Metal-Thread Woven Silk Panel, Morocco, 17th century
