Special strike with slightly satiny relief. Only minimal marks on the listels, scratches in the field on the right and a tiny shock in the field on the reverse. The fields have been lightly rubbed, with hairlines. Slight golden patina. Spectacular. Superb.
In 1701, the Act of Settlement was amended to benefit only the Protestant descendants of the Kings of England and Scotland. Sophie of Bavaria-Palatinate, who had become Duchess Consort of Brunswick-Luneburg by marriage and from 1679 Duchess Electress Consort of Hanover, then aged 71, became heir to the Stuart throne as Queen Anne's closest Protestant relative. However, Sophie did not crown herself; she died on 8 June 1714, aged eighty-four, during a walk in her gardens, just two months before the British sovereign, who was only forty-nine. It was her son George Louis who ascended the British throne as George I. The Hanover dynasty remained in power until the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, whose husband, Prince Consort Albert, was a Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
