NGC PF 64 ULTRA CAMEO (5778839-002). Edge inscribed: DECUS ET TUTAMEN * ANNO REGNI TERTIO *. Exceptional copy, browned blank and corner flower. Designed by William Wyon (1795-1851) in 1839 to commemorate the beginning of Victoria's reign (in 1837), the 5 pound coin "Una and the lion" is recognised as one of the most beautiful British coins. Victoria, accompanied by a lion, advances to the left, with the motto "May God direct my steps". The young Queen, then aged 20, is depicted as Lady Una, based on a character in Edmund Spencer's 1590 poem The Faerie Queene. This bold design is the first representation of a British monarch as a fictional character: the lion representing England is led by Queen Victoria, as Una, who guides it with her sceptre. * Following Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of April 5, 2022, implemented in national law from 01/01/2025, buyers from within the EU have to pay 5.5% VAT on the hammer price of this lot. * Following Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of April 5, 2022, implemented in national law from 01/01/2025, buyers from within the EU have to pay 5.5% VAT on the hammer price of this lot.
