Large and beautiful statue of a Kamanabit ancestor, polychrome carved wood, feathers, shells and plant fibres, Sepik River, Papua New Guinea, h. 185 cm Provenance: bought in 1975 from Galerie Claude Jongen Good condition A few chips and cracks that do not detract from the piece: Minor damage to the wood, cowrie shells and ear cords Long vertical crack on the back Crack on the base Some pigment restoration The back is not decorated Fragile balance: the statue stands upright but its stability is not guaranteed The invoice from the Claude Jongen gallery was 105,000 Belgian francs, which at the time in 1975 corresponded to around CHF5,250.
