LARGE PAINTING OF KRISHNA AP-APPEARING TO ARJUNA IN THE FORM OF VISHVARUPA
India, probably Marwar, Rajasthan, late 19th century
Pigments and gold on paper, the god and Arjuna both depicted standing in a wooded landscape, the sun and moon adorning the horizon, identified in devanagari, framed.
Size: 55.5 x 43 cm
The slightly raised hem of the jama worn by Arjuna is a typical feature of Marwari painting. The sun god Surya, tutelary deity of the Marwari royal family, is depicted in the upper right-hand corner of the painting, which also suggests that this exceptionally large series of paintings was made in or around Jodhpur, in the state of Marwar.
A Large Painting of Arjuna in adoration before Vishvarupa,
Probably Marwar, Rajasthan, India, late 19th century
