A LARGE INDIAN STYLE RUG, PROBABLY PORTUGAL, SIGNED 'STARK', CIRCA 1940; GOOD CONDITION
The type of knot used for this Portuguese rug is called braid stitch and comes from the town of Arraiolos in southern Portugal.
The production of these carpets dates back to the Renaissance period and the tradition has continued until today. The most beautiful examples date back to the 17th century and were embroidered on large hemp dishcloths with a needle. The marvellous decoration is reminiscent of elegant three-light windows or marble passageways reminiscent of the Royal Palaces.
