Lot no. 190
GREAT HAITI WALL HANGING
Morocco, 19th-20th century
Assembly of six panels of yellow silk embroidered with floral motifs in gold thread, each panel representing a niche or mihrab, one crenellated row at the top, lined with cotton canvas.
Size: 142 x 291 cm
These mihrab hangings were originally intended to be hung in tents, haïti meaning 'wall'. They are often characterised by shimmering, contrasting colours. Other examples, such as a hanging sold at Artcurial, 21 May 2025, no.156, are notable for their decoration embroidered with metal threads.
