Lot no. 104
GREBO, Ivory Coast.
Hardwood, deep black patina, highlights of natural pigments.
The Grebo are part of the Krou group, found in central-eastern and south-eastern Liberia and western Côte d'Ivoire, in a largely forested area. There are very few figurative works and masks among the Grebo.
This ancient and rare 'Kpandoho' dance mask was carved by the highest-ranking initiates and was associated with initiation rituals.
This representation of a spirit from the invisible world living in the forest is embodied here by a man's face with strong features.
