Locri Epizephyrii, Locres Épizéphyrienne in French, was founded in the 8th century on the coast of the Ionian Sea, perhaps by slaves allied with Sparta during the First Messenian War who fled with their masters' wives (according to Aristotle). In the fifth century, Locres was allied with Syracuse and took in Dionysius the Younger after his banishment. In 280 BC, the city allied itself with the Molossian king Pyrrhus I, cousin of Alexander the Great. The city then rallied to the Carthaginians for a time, before siding with the Romans in the second century, becoming their permanent ally.
