ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK Macedonia (kingdom of), Demetrius I Poliorcete (294-288 BC). Tetradrachm ND (295-294 BC), Milet. Av. Niké standing left, on a ship's prow, holding a stylis in her left hand and a trumpet in her right. Rv. ΔHΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ. Nude Poseidon, advancing left, seen from behind, holding mantle in left hand and brandishing trident in right; in field to right, dolphin and star and in field to left, monogram. HGC.3/1012 - Newell 50; Silver - 17.16 g - 29 mm - 7 h NGC Ch AU 4/5 4/5 die shift (8583610-006). The strike is off-centre to the right with the victory head missing. The reverse is barely off-centre to the left, with Poseidon perfectly clear and complete. Our copy has circulated little, with a light patina with golden highlights. Superb / Superb to Fleur de coin. Demetrios "Poliorcetes" [the taker of cities] had this type struck to commemorate the naval victory of Samothrace which took place in the waters of Salamis in 306 BC, against the fleet of Ptolemy I. The Niké or victory standing on the prow of the ship refers to the statue "The Victory of Samothrace".
