The Macedonian king Perseus probably minted this series to reward the Cretan mercenaries who served in his army (Liv. XLII, 51, 7). The master of the coin may have been Hermias, son of Zoilos of Oropos, who died in Delphi in 178 BC as a hieromnemon [cf. Ashton, NC 1948 (1988) pp. 29-30 or Price, Larissa Hoard (1989) pp. 241-242].
