ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK Mysia, Lampsak. Electrum statere ND (c.411 BC), Lampsak. Av. Protome of Pegasus left; Ξ below; around, vine branches with bunches and leaves. Rv. Quadripartite hollow square. Jameson 1432 (same corners) - SNG Paris 1112 (same corners) - SNG von Aulock 1292 (same corners) - Traité II, 327 and pl.VIII n° 4 (same corners) ; Electrum - 15,05 g - 18,4 mm - 12 h From a purchase from the Leu bank in February 1972. NGC XF 5/5 4/5 (8583609-004). On a spectacular electrum ingot, with a beautiful yellow colour, slightly shiny. The strike is centred, with Pegasus well complete. Minimal flats on the high reliefs. Rare. Superb. The vineyards of Lampsaque were renowned, as shown by the vine engraved around Pegasus on the right. The vineyards of Lampsachia are mentioned by Strabo (Strabo XIII, 12), Thucydides (Thucydides 1.138.5) and Plutarch (Plutarch Themistocles. 29).
