ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK Lagid kingdom, Ptolemy II (283-246 BC). Golden octodrachm or mnaieion ND (272-270 BC), Alexandria. Av. AΔEΛΦΩN. Joined busts right of Ptolemy II, diademed, and Arsinoe II, diademed and veiled; behind, a Galatian shield. Rv. ΘEΩN. Bust of Ptolemy I, diademed, and Berenice I, diademed and veiled. CPE.313 - Sv.603 - SNG Cop.132 ; Gold - 27.83 g - 26 mm - 12 h Beautiful minting, in high relief, slightly off-centre, especially on the reverse. Only minor surface contact marks and fine scratches. Nice golden patina. Superb at Fleur de coin. The new reinforced coinage of Ptolemy II, called mnaieion (octodrachm of gold) and pentekontedrachmon (tetradrachm of gold) for their half shows the four royal portraits: on the right Ptolemy II and his sister-wife Arsinoe, with the epitaph Adelphon and, on the reverse, the portraits of their parents, Ptolemy I and Berenice, identified as God with the epitaph Theon.
