Lot no. 28
ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK Sicily, Siculo-Punic issues. Tetradrachm ND (c.320-290 BC), Entella ? Head of Herakles-Melqart with lion's head right. Rv. Horse's head left; palm tree behind; Punic inscription MHMNHT (Mechasbim) in exergue. SNG Delepierre 725; Silver - 17.3 g - 22 mm - 9 h NGC AU 5/5 4/5 Fine style (8583610-002). Of fine strike, in high relief, having slightly burst the blank. With slight wear and a nice grey patina. Superb at Fleur de coin. Entella, founded by the Trojans around 500 BC, is one of the major possibilities for the location of the Carthaginian "camp" in Sicily. This was undoubtedly their main stronghold, where the mercenaries in Carthage's pay received their payment in good coinage, inspired by the tetradrachms of Attic weight, with a Greek or Sicilian motif on the right, Heracles in the case of our example, and a freer reverse with the date palm (Phoenix in Greek), which is the distinctive coat of arms of Carthage and the Phoenicians. Another workshop attribution has been proposed for Lilybaea, now Marsala.
