Syracuse decadrachms have rightly been admired since antiquity, not only for their impressive size and weight, but above all for the artistry and classical style they convey. They are considered the pinnacle of numismatic achievement in the Greek world, minted at the height of Syracuse's power and glory, during the reign of Dionysius the Elder. Decadrachms signed by the artists Kimon and Evainetes were introduced early in the reign, around 400 BC. Stamps for Evainetes continued to be struck until at least the 360s, by Evainetes himself and then by his pupils and successors.
