ANCIENT GREECE - GREEK Sicily, Syracuse, Hieron I (477-466 BC). Tetradrachma ND (475-470 BC), Syracuse. Av. Quadriga at pace right, led by a helmeted charioteer, surmounted by a Niké flying right with a crown. Rv. ΣVR-ΑΚ-ΟΣΙ-OΝ. Head of Arethusa right, her hair held by a taenia, wearing a pearl necklace, surrounded by four dolphins. Boehr.296 (V142/R204) - SNG ANS 97 - Randazzo 462 ; Silver - 17,36 g - 25,5 mm - 5 h NGC Ch XF 2/5 5/5 flan flaw (8237653-009). With flan casting burr. Striking fault on reverse which has created an outgrowth of metal (from weak strike to opposite right). Clear and detailed depictions of Arethusa and the charioteer with the trimmed beard. Grey patina with golden highlights. A superb piece.
