Horse standing right, turning its head back. Jenkins-Lewis group IX, 383 v. - Müller III, 66 - SNG Cop.181 ; Gold - 12,51 g - 22 mm - 12 h From a Münzen & Medaillen 32 sale, 20 October 1966, No. 185, then from the Jean-Louis Noisiez collection, Jean Vinchon Numismatique sale, No. 43. NGC AU 5/5 3/5 brushed (8232365-001). Wide flan and beautiful style. The right is perfectly centred and in high relief, the reverse is slightly concave, with the strike barely off-centre. Only a few flats on the hair strands and minimal hairlines and traffic marks in the fields. Beautiful golden patina on the original gloss. Superb to Fleur de coin. Tanit was the primary deity of Carthage, and is always depicted on the coin wearing a crown of ears of wheat borrowed from Demeter and Persephone, as the Carthaginians assimilated Sicilian culture into their own during the various Punic excursions to the island. The horse on the reverse is also linked to Carthaginian tradition. According to Virgil's Aeneid, the Phoenician colonists who founded Carthage were invited by Juno (or Tanit) to establish the new colony on the spot where they discovered a horse's head in the ground. * Following Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of April 5, 2022, implemented in national law from 01/01/2025, buyers from within the EU have to pay 5.5% VAT on the hammer price of this lot. * Following Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of April 5, 2022, implemented in national law from 01/01/2025, buyers from within the EU have to pay 5.5% VAT on the hammer price of this lot.
