GREEK BRONZE CHALCIDIAN HELMET WITH RARE ENGRAVED DECORATION. Ca. 500 BC. A bronze Chalcidian helmet with a hemispherical skull, formed in one piece with a low dome and near-vertical sides. The lower edge is shaped to a slender central nasal lobe and a shallow nape flange, with paired crescentic eye cut-outs flanking the nasal, broad lunate ear openings, and drilled apertures along the rim for the attachment of separate cheek pieces. The brow bears an engraved frieze of stylised flocks of lion fur, a symbol of Heracles.
