GREEK GOLD MEDALLION WITH TETHYS RIDING A SEAHORSE.
Ca. 300 - 200 BC. A gold medallion featuring a high-relief depiction of Tethys seated on a seahorse amid stylised waves. The central figure, shown in profile, has intricately detailed hair arranged in a tight braid. The facial features are finely defined, with a slightly downward gaze and a serene expression. The upper body is unclothed, with bracelets adorning the arms. The seahorse, rendered with a long sinuous body covered in detailed overlapping scales, has a curled tail that coils to one side. The head displays prominent eyes, an elongated snout, and flared nostrils, with a mane-like crest extending down the neck. The outer edge of the medallion is slightly raised and smooth, framing the composition. A suspension loop at the top, formed by tightly wound gold wire, allows for attachment.
