GREEK SILVER TETRADRACHM DEPICTING ALEXANDER THE GREAT IN LATER 18K SILVER-GILT PENDANT
Ca. 323 - 280 BC. A silver tetradrachm depicting on the obverse the head of Herakles facing right, shown wearing the lion-skin headdress of the Nemean lion, the mane rendered with individual tufts and the forepaws tied around the neck. The facial features are deeply carved with a pronounced brow, straight nose, and parted lips. The reverse presents Zeus enthroned left, draped and seated on a throne. He holds a sceptre in his left hand and an eagle in his outstretched right. The legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ (Alexander) runs vertically behind the god. The coin is set in a modern 18k silver-gilt pendant mount with a wide flared suspension loop. For similar see: Catalogo dei bCI, N. Inv. 0800140145.
