Lot no. 72
GREFE (Konrad) and PENHART (Markus). Panorama von der Spitze des Großglockner. Vienna, Oesterreichischen Alpenvereins, 1866. Colour lithograph, 59 x 318 cm, mounted on canvas, folding (10 segments lengthwise and 2 heightwise, 20 segments in total). A very large and superb lithographed panorama in colour.
This panorama is a reduction of the panorama painted by Markus Pernhart, who climbed the Grossglockner 8 times and painted a panorama 16 metres long and 2 metres high from the summit! It was lithographed on a scale of 1/6 by Conrad Grefe and published by the Austrian Alpine Club in 5 sheets (each cut into 4 segments) in 300 copies.
Markus Penhart (Medgorje 1824 - Klagenfurt 1871) was a painter of Slovenian origin; he was the most famous Carinthian landscape painter of his time; he climbed the highest peaks in Austria and painted immense panoramic views from these summits.
Conrad Grefe (Vienna 1823 - Tulbing 1907) was an Austrian painter and lithographer. He was a founder member of the Austrian Alpine Club in 1862 and served on its Board of Directors until 1873. He devoted himself to depicting the Austrian Alps and contributed illustrations to the Jahrbuch des Oesterreichischen Alpen-Vereines, the organ of the Austrian Alpine Club until it merged with that of the German Alpine Club in 1874.
