Lot no. 23
GRENADE (R.P. Louis de). La Grand'Guide des pecheurs pour les acheminer a vertu... Translated from Spanish into French by Paul Du Mont. Paris, Robert Le Fizelier, 1585. In-8 (175 x 110 mm), supple brown morocco, fanfare decoration on spine, oval Crucifixion plate, silver edges (blackened). No copy in France, only one copy cited by USTC-83179. PENITENT BINDING IN SUPPLE MOROCCO WITH SILVER DECORATION. The arms and motto of Henri III (SPES MEA DEUS) and a skull stamped in silver on the spine. The copy, already remarkable for these two reasons, also contains the name of the penitent, which is very rare (handwritten ex-libris "François de Choiseul" on the upper flyleaf). THIS IS FRANÇOIS DE CHOISEUL-MEUSE. This François de Choiseul (c. 1533-c. 1603), the youngest son of Pierre de Choiseul d'Aigremont, had a very eventful life with his cousin by marriage Joachim de Dinteville, one of Henri III's most trusted men, lieutenant general in Champagne and Brie from 1579 until his death in 1607. Choiseul became a knight of St Michael around 1577, and then one of the gentlemen of Henry III's chamber. Although it seems certain that Choiseul had the Italian banker-turned-gentleman Louis d'Adjacet, Count of Châteauvillain (in Champagne) murdered on 26 April 1593, it is not known whether he was taking revenge for an affront or acting on orders. The latter is the more likely hypothesis, as Dinteville had allowed Choiseul to escape despite the prosecution of Adjacet's widow, the beautiful "Mademoiselle d'Atri" (Anne d'Aquaviva). François de Choiseul took refuge in Franche-Comté and died around 1603. Minor scuffing at foot of spine and upper hinge, faint wetness in upper margin at end of volume. M.
