Lot no. 61
[GRIMOD DE LA REYNIÈRE (Alexandre-Balthazar). Lorgnette philosophique, trouvé par un R. P. Capucin under the Arcades of the Palais-Royal, and presented to the public, by a bachelor. London and Paris, by the author, 1785. 2 parts in one small volume in-12, marbled calf, smooth spine decorated in the grotesque style, red edges (Binding of the period). First edition.
"Second work by Grimod de La Reynière after the Réflexions philosophiques sur le plaisir par un célibataire published in 1783, the Lorgnette philosophique is intended in the same way to make its author better known and above all his amphitryon extravagances, about which the press had already spoken at length: he returns here.... on his 'famous supper' of 1783, whose theatrical production had interested the public, and he describes his Wednesday 'philosophical lunches', which brought together seventeen learned guests" (J.-C. Bonnet).
The author's copy with the visiting card of Grimod de La Reynière (1758-1837) serving as his bookplate. (Is this Grimod's copy or has a carte de visite just been pasted to the flyleaf?)
From the libraries of Charles-Marie d'Irumberry, comte de Salaberry (1766-1847); Maurice Sailland dit Curnonsky (1872-1956); Michel de Bry (1890-1970); Raymond Oliver (1909-1990), with their four bookplates.
