Lot no. 24
[GRINGORE (Pierre). Le Chasteau de labeur. Newly printed, hystoried, commented, & curiously emended. Lyon, Claude Nourry dit Le Prince, 1526. Small in-8, red morocco, Du Seuil decoration, ornate spine, olive morocco lining with lace, combed endpapers, gilt edges (Koehler). A very rare Lyon Gothic edition of this famous allegorical poem, decorated with 32 curious woodcut vignettes. The printer's mark appears at the end of the volume. Oulmont, in his study of Pierre Gringore, identifies this edition with that of 1529 due to an error in the Yemeniz catalogue; the colophon does, however, bear the date mil ccccc xxvi. Le Château de labeur is the first printed work by Gringore (1475-1539), an esteemed poet and playwright from Lorraine and protégé of Louis XII. This long poem about the various tribulations of life, particularly those of marriage, is an adaptation of La Voie et adresse de pauvreté et de richesse, composed in 1342 by Jacques Bruyant. It was first printed in 1499. A copy in a fine lined binding by François Koehler. The only copy cited by Brunet, from the libraries of Charles Nodier (1844, no. 346) and Nicolas Yemeniz (1867, no. 1725), with their bookplates. Copy a little short of margins, but without damage to the text; angular repair affecting two letters on f. D3. Spine very slightly faded and minor rubbing. Brunet, II, 1744 (quoted copy) - Baudrier, XII, 142 - Gültlingen, I, 88, n°126 - Bechtel, G-254 - Tchemerzine, III, 520 c - Oulmont, 30, n°12.
