The first edition of this famous collection appeared in 1719. 94 intaglio plates numbered I to LXXXVII. Plates 39, 48 and 76 do not exist, as the notes on pages 58, 70 and 113 indicate. But plates 31, 52, 56 and 76 are double and plate 84 is quadruple. Displayed in a cabinet open to the public once a week, the collection of machines assembled by the Lyon-born Grollier de Servière (1596-1689) aroused such great interest that Louis XIV decided to visit it. Inside of the volume fresh, worm work on a few quires, spine of the binding very worn.
