Large Meissen hunting figure of a pheasant. Pheasant cock sitting on an irregular grass base with naturalistically painted plumage in relief in polychrome painting. Designed by Johann Joachim Kaendler, c. 1773, model no. E 25, unmarked; crossed swords mark. H. 43 cm. L. approx. 43 cm.
Originally designed as a tureen for use with various dishes to decorate the festive tables of aristocratic hunting parties. In addition to various tureen models in the shape of hunting animals, J.J. Kaendler designed the pheasant tureen for the "Prince of Dessau" (Prince Eugene of Anhalt-Dessau).
