Large Meissen figurine "Cupid, feeding nightingales". Original title
High, profiled round base, on which is mounted the figure of Cupid as a youth sitting on a tree trunk with plastically applied flower umbels and leaves, dressed in a purple-coloured cloth. In his left hand he holds a filled golden bowl with which he feeds young birds in their nest, in his right hand he holds an arrow. A lyre hanging from the side of the branch, attached by a ribbon, inscribed "Philomele". Polychrome painting with rich gold decoration. Designed by Rudolf Hölbe, c. 1882 - 1885, inscribed "Dresden" on the reverse. Minimally rep. / rest.; crossed swords mark. H. 41 cm.
The sculptor Rudolf Hölbe (1848 - 1926) studied at the academies in Leipzig and Dresden between 1868 and 1870 and was later a pupil of Johannes Schilling. From 1886 onwards, he presented historical, mythological and genre figures at various German exhibitions. Between 1897 and 1899, the Meissen manufactory acquired several models, including the figure "Amor, die Nachtigallen fütternd" and the counterpart of Psyche (model no. N 196).
