Lot no. 847
Large Meissen figurine "Psyche, unleashed". Original title Psyche, Cupid's lover, standing on a profiled, gold-contoured oval base as a semi-nude with pastel-coloured butterfly wings and a hip scarf covering her shame. Polychrome painting. Designed by Emmerich Andresen, 1885, model no. N 157, crossed swords mark. H. 39 cm. The sculptor Emmerich Andresen (1843 - 1902), who trained in Hamburg and Dresden under Ernst Gottfried Vivié and Ernst Julius Hähnel respectively, created several charming female allegories with a classical-academic habitus that display the characteristic stylistic features of large-scale sculpture. Andresen was highly acclaimed at the Berlin Art Exhibition in 1871 with his statue "Psyche Bound", which was purchased by Kaiser Wilhelm I for the Berlin Palace. In 1886, he was appointed head of the design department at the Meissen porcelain manufactory. Andresen created a corresponding counterpart in the form of the figure "Psyche, bound" (model no. N 166). Cf. Jedding, Meißener Porzellan des 19. und 20. Jhs, p. 141; Thieme-Becker, vol. XXX, p. 481. An allegorical porcelain figure of Psyche modelled by E. Andresen. Crossed swords mark. Meissen. Late 19th century.
