The Fürth-born sculptor Johann Christian Hirt (1836 - 1897) studied classical sculpture under Max von Widnmann at the Munich Academy from 1855. He created numerous statues and small sculptures in bronze, silver and porcelain. In the early 1880s, the Meissen manufactory acquired compositionally comparable figures such as the "Boy with Dog" (M 149) and "Girl with Goat" (M 152).
