Large Meissen animal figure of a lioness Standing on a rectangular moulded base, an attentively observing lioness with naturalistic fur pattern. Polychrome painting with subtle gold contouring. Designed by August Gaul. Marked; model no. A 1054. Sword mark. H. 31,5 cm. L. 45 cm.
The Meissen manufactory acquired around 20 models from Prof. Gaul's (1869-1921) estate in 1922, which were moulded in Böttger stoneware and white porcelain under the supervision of his pupil Max Esser between 1922 and 1926. These included the smaller version of the life-size lioness as a bronze sculpture from 1901, which brought Gaul great success at the time.
