Lot no. 828
Large mythological Meissen figurine group "Apollo and Daphne". Two-piece group on a rocaille base in bold relief, depicting the pursuit of Daphne by Apollo and her transformation into a laurel tree. The god Apollo stands in an outstretched running posture wearing a purple-coloured cloth with a pattern of black and golden flowers and dark, flowing hair. His arms are stretched forwards to be grasped. Daphne as the counterpart with a turned posture, turning round with a frightened look and stretching her arms upwards. Her unclothed body shows the incipient metamorphosis. Polychrome painting with gold contouring. Designed by Johann Friedrich Eberlein. Model no. 2900, remainder; crossed swords mark. H. 38.5 cm - 42.5 cm.
The figure model was originally designed together with further "8 Grouppen" as a figural table decoration for the so-called "Vestunen-Service", which Frederick the Great commissioned in Meissen in 1763.
