Lot no. 463
Large Bolognese dog by Meissen A naturalistic depiction of the Bolognese dog sitting on its hind paws, eyes wide open and mouth open, head turned to the left, wearing a collar with belt buckle. Coat worked in high relief. Polychrome painting with gold decoration. Designed by Johann Joachim Kaendler. Model no. 129, crossed swords mark. H. 43.5 cm.
Originally designed around 1734, the Bolognese dog is one of Kaendler's most impressive animal sculptures. Not least the realistic fur pattern, the naturalistic colouring and the lively expression suggest a living model. Kaendler's work reports from the summer of 1734 show that he studied various animals for his models in real life.
