LARGE FOLDING OR TRAVELLING TOOL PROBABLY OF A GARDENER German or Dutch, around 1600. Oval, slightly curved walnut handle, inlaid with engraved ivory and mother-of-pearl in the shape of two angels holding grotesque shields, surrounded by tendrils with partly stylised flowers. Scale band. The domed grip cap engraved with a rosette, pommel missing. Grip ferrule engraved with leaf decoration, the outermost ring rotating to lock the folding tools: three different blades and a saw. Various smith's marks and an old inventory number 180. L 22.5 cm. Signs of use, iron parts corroded. The indication that this is a gardener's tool is taken, for example, from: Dorotheum auction catalogue, Franz Emmerich Graf Lamberg cutlery collection. Vienna, 1912. p. 12, fig. 125. This multifunctional tool has three identical blades and similar design features on the handle. Another "Couteau de jardinier" (gardener's knife) from the 16th century is in the Musée de la Renaissance Château d'Ecouen and shows similar blade shapes (inv. no. EC99). This object has a trade licence for the EU. Due to the use of protected materials, this object may not leave the EU.
