Lot no. 20
Large mural with rose decoration Rectangular panel on wood. Violet-coloured background applied in glaze with a broad brush. Large-scale arrangement of different coloured roses in the mirror. Painted in polychrome in an airy, loose style and partially etched in gold. Painter's monogr. "B" with dat. (19)96, probably for Horst Bretschneider. Limited to 79/1996. monogr. "A" for studio porcelain of the Meissen porcelain manufactory. Centreboard mark. 44.5 cm x 45 cm. The decoration is reminiscent of the flower painting by Prof. Julius Eduard Braunsdorf. J. E. Braunsdorf (1841 - 1922) revolutionised Meissen flower painting at the end of the 19th century. He turned away from the traditional bouquet style in favour of an impressionistic, characteristic style with a penchant for free brushstrokes and soft, diffuse transitions. Subsequent generations of painters orientated themselves towards the Braunsdorf style and developed a wide range of variations in Meissen flower painting. See Jedding, Meissen Porcelain of the 19th and 20th Centuries, p. 144. A large porcelain wall plaque with roses, probably painted by H. Bretschneider. Crossed swords mark. Meissen. Circa 1996.
