The manuscript of the novel 'Life and Destiny', of a resolutely anti-Stalinist nature, which the writer had been working on since 1950, was given by the author to the editors of the magazine 'Znamya' for publication. In early 1961, all copies of the manuscript were confiscated by the KGB following a search of the writer's home. In the mid-1970s, after the writer's death, with the help of A.D. Sakharov, B. Okudzhava and V.N. Voinovich, a copy of the novel was transported to the West and published for the first time in Switzerland in 1980.
