GROUP OF FIGURES: DESCENT INTO HELL Baroque, Italy, probably Naples, ca. 1715. The model after Lorenzo Vaccaro (1655-1706). Parcel-gilt and partly chased bronze and silver. The winged archangel Michael with a magnificent helmet, sword and shield, conquering Satan. Satan in a plunging posture on a blazing hellfire. On an octagonal, stepped, ebonized wooden base with pierced silver applications. Unidentified silver mark on the applications to the base. Multiple tremolo lines. H 60 cm. The base and the top figure probably assorted. Rubbing, chips and scratches. Minor chipping and minor casting defects. The base with a crack and some detached strips. Minor losses to the silver applications at the base. Provenance: Private collection, Germany. The two sculptures exemplify the Neapolitan late Baroque in all its drama and opulence. A clear proximity to Lorenzo Vaccaro cannot be denied. Vaccaro worked as an architect, painter, silversmith and sculptor in various media and with different materials. He mainly received ecclesiastical commissions and specialized in figures of saints, funerary monuments and portraits for local churches. A monumental group of figures from 1691 by the Neapolitan goldsmith Giandomenico Vinaccia in collaboration with Vaccaro for the chapel of San Gennaro in Naples (exhibited at the Museo Capodimonte Naples in the exhibition 'Luca Giordano, dalla Natura alla Pittura', October 8, 2020-April 11, 2021) was probably the inspiration and model for the present, small-format sculptures. The facial types, the general treatment of the drapery and the distorted posture of the main figure, who leans to the right and rests his weight on his left leg in order to slay the devil with a lance, are similar to those of the sculptures on offer. A similar archangel made of partly gilt silver is part of the Compton Verney Collection (inv. no. ARTUK_004). That sculpture is dated to ca. 1700 and differs from the ones on offer in the use of a much smaller Lucifer or devil figure at the bottom. * The full tax is charged on this item marked * in the auction catalogue, i.e. VAT is charged on the sum of the bid price plus the surcharge for those items. Der Satan in stürzender Haltung auf loderndem Höllenfeuer. Auf einem oktogonalen, mehrfach eingezogenen und gestuften, ebonisierten Holzsockel mit durchbrochenen Silberapplikationen. Unidentifizierte Silberpunze an den Applikationen der Basis. Mehrfache Tremolierstriche. H 60 cm. Sockel und Aufsatzfigur wohl assortiert. Bereibungen, Bestossungen und Kratzer. Kleinere Ausbrüche und minime Gussfehler. Sockel mit Riss und sich teils lösenden Leisten. Kleinere Fehlstellen an den Silberapplikationen an der Basis. Provenienz: Privatsammlung, Deutschland. Die beiden Skulpturen veranschaulichen exemplarisch den neapolitanischen Spätbarock in seiner ganzen Dramatik und Opulenz. Eine deutliche Nähe zu Lorenzo Vaccaro ist nicht von der Hand zu weisen. Vaccaro war als Architekt, Maler, Silberschmied und Bildhauer in verschiedenen Medien und mit verschiedenen Materialien tätig. Er erhielt hauptsächlich kirchliche Aufträge und spezialisierte sich auf Heiligenfiguren, Grabmäler und Porträts für lokale Kirchen. Eine monumentale Figurengruppe aus dem Jahr 1691 von dem neapolitanischen Goldschmied Giandomenico Vinaccia in Zusammenarbeit mit Vaccaro für die Kapelle von San Gennaro in Neapel (ausgestellt im Museo Capodimonte Neapel in der Schau ‘Luca Giordano, dalla Natura alla Pittura’, 8. Oktober 2020–11. April 2021) war wohl Inspiration und Modell für die vorliegenden, kleinformatigen Skulpturen. Die Gesichtstypen, die allgemeine Behandlung der Draperie und die verzerrte Haltung der Hauptfigur, die sich nach rechts lehnt und ihr Gewicht auf das linke Bein legt, um den Teufel mit einer Lanze zu erschlagen, ähneln denen der vorliegenden Werke. Ein ähnlicher Erzengel aus teils vergoldetem Silber ist Teil der Sammlung Compton Verney (Inv.-Nr. ARTUK_004). Jenes Exemplar wird in die Zeit um 1700 datiert und unterscheidet sich zu unseren Exemplaren in der Verwendung eines deutlich kleineren Luzifers bzw. Teufelsfigur am Boden. Dieses mit * (Asterisk) bezeichnete Objekte ist vollumfänglich mehrwertsteuerpflichtig, d. h. bei diesen Objekten wird die MWST auf den Zuschlagspreis plus Aufgeld berechnet. Käufer, die eine rechtsgültig abgestempelte Ausfuhrdeklaration vorlegen, erhalten die MWST rückvergütet.
