GRÜNER (Gottlieb Sigmund). Natural history of the glaciers of Switzerland. Paris, Panckoucke, 1770. In-4, marbled basane, ornate spine, brown morocco title-piece, fillets on the edges, red edges (Binding of the period). The original French edition of this important and much sought-after work on the Swiss Alps and the glaciers of the Mont Blanc massif, freely translated by Chevalier Louis-Félix Guinement de Kéralio from the original German edition published in Bern in 1760. The work is particularly sought-after for its illustration, drawn by J. L. Aberli, S. H. Grim, D. Dürringer, G. Walser and others and finely engraved in intaglio by A. Zingg, comprising a frontispiece, 2 large fold-out maps, a caption plate and 18 folded out-of-text views at the end of the volume. Plate XIII is the oldest known panoramic view of Mont Blanc. A fine, fresh copy with wide margins. Ex-libris of Mr Roucher. Corners worn and missing; epidermis on the second plate, small tear with missing lower corner of page 205. Perret, n°2072.
