Born in Naples in 1879, he was the son of the actor Giovanni Emanuel. Initially a journalist working for La Stampa in Turin, in 1906 he joined the Corriere della Sera , run by Luigi Albertini. He was a special correspondent in London before returning to Italy in 1920. A convinced anti-fascist, during the twenty years of Fascism he worked as an editorial agent for the King Features Syndicate, which owned the rights to the most important American comic strips (including those by Disney). At the end of the Fascist period, he took over the management of Il Giornale, a Neapolitan daily newspaper with monarchist sympathies. In August 1946, he became director of Corriere della Sera. He became a painter in 1952, inheriting the travels of his past as a correspondent, particularly in London... He was nicknamed "Le peintre de Paris" ("The painter of Paris") because of his love of Parisian landscapes. In 1959, he had already held his 8th exhibition.
