Lyon, Guillaume Barbier, 1660. 2 volumes in one folio, granite-coloured basane, spine decorated, speckled edges (Binding late 18th century). First edition of this "monumental, esteemed and rare work: it is superior and more sought-after than the second" (Saffroy).
Very fine intaglio illustration by Hans Jacob Thurneysen and Antoine de Pienne, including an allegorical frontispiece after Blancher, portraits of the author and Christine de France, Duchess of Savoy, and numerous figures in the text of portraits, coats of arms, recumbents, seals, sculptures, etc.
Autograph signed letter from the author on the title page: Pour Monsieur le Comte Sansios, Conseill. et Secretaire d'Estat de S.A.R. et du cabinet de M.R. Par son très humble et très obéissant serviteur allié le chevalier Guichenon.
Missing folding map of the Duchy of Savoy. Binding restored, some leaves repaired in margins, f. 611-612 rebacked and folded, scattered foxing and spotting.
