Lot no. 51
Guillaume APOLLINAIRE. L.A.S. "Gui" (the beginning is missing), [9 May 1915], to Louise de Coligny-Châtillon 2 pages in-12 on fine paper. Unpublished addition to a letter to Lou. This sheet was slipped into the letter-card of 9 May 1915; it had not been published in the Lettres à Lou by M. Décaudin, who assumed the existence of a lost supplementary sheet; here it has been found. Apollinaire evoked lilacs.
"Purple lilacs and white lilacs, they are so fragrant that it seems to me that it is you that I am kissing. The weather today is wonderful, with a breeze. This morning I went to mass in another village up ahead. It was an infantryman priest who was officiating, and when I got there towards the end I saw the priest undress, and it was strange to see this officiant being transformed little by little into a simple soldier. Then I passed by a dead horse with its genitals in prolapse. From it rose a cloud of big, golden flies that made music like a distant harmonium or a crystalline harmony. What does the nice doggie say? He has already spent eight months of this hard, dangerous and monotonous life at the front. From what you were saying, there seem to be more civilians on his side than on mine. Yesterday at 6 a.m. I had to go to a village where there is a headquarters set up in a delightful little 18th century château. The woodwork is of the period and the grounds are magnificent. I thought I was dreaming. We poor woodlanders have become real savages and we are astonished by the slightest luxury. The ululations of the night birds, the slithering of the snake, the nibbling of the rats, the song of the nightingale, the sawing of the corncrake, the mewing of the shells, the flowers, the foliage, these are our luxuries. But from time to time we still have a laugh. Tomorrow I'll tell you about some of the funny things I've seen or heard.
Two sprigs of forget-me-not in my letter mean don't forget me and above all don't forget to measure the ring, which I'll be so pleased to do and above all to do at least as well as the first one. My little Lou, take you in my arms and give you a big kiss and I'll take your tongue. Mistletoe".
