GUILLEMEAU (Jacques). Tables anatomiques avec les pourtraicts et déclarations d'iceulx. Ensemble un denombrement de cinq cens Maladies diverses. Paris, Jean Charron, 1586. In-folio, vellum (contemporary binding). Illustrated engraved title (with printed title on verso), 1f (index) with on verso the portrait of the author signed A. Valleus dated 1585), 1f. dedication to the king, 2ff, with poems dedicated to the author by Ambroise Paré, J. E . du Monin I. Megnier, 1 f. (To the reader), 106 pp, 1 f. (printer's mark). First edition, with 19 full-page engraved plates. This is one of the first publications by the famous surgeon Guillemeau, who was born in Orléans in 1549 and died in Paris in 1613. A close friend of Ambroise Paré, whose works he translated into Latin, Guillemeau was surgeon to kings Charles IX, Henri III and Henri IV. The Tables anatomiques are in two parts. The first deals with anatomy, the second with pathology. The plates are inverted copies of those in an edition of Valverde's Anatomia del corpo published in Venice in 1560. This first edition appears to be very rare. A second edition appeared in 1598. A slightly faded copy, with marginal spotting and a patched binding. Unknown to Durling - Norman 956.
