Large volume (32,5 x 27,5 cm), green morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt imperial eagles, medallion with effigy of Napoleon inlaid on the first cover, gilt head (Engel). Luxurious edition of Sacha Guitry's Napoléon limited to 5985 numbered copies, this one of the 68 numbered copies on Arches water vellum signed by Guitry and containing two original historical documents, in a publisher's sleeve: - a LAS from Henri-Jacques-Guillaume Clarke (1765-1818), a French general in the Empire and Napoleon I's Minister of War, who was made Count of Hunebourg and Count of the Empire, then Duke of Feltre and Marshal of France in 1816. The letter dated Paris 11 August 1813 on watermarked paper with the letterhead of the Ministry of War is addressed to the General of the Empire Christophe Antoine Merlin (1771-1839) to thank him for his zeal during an inspection of the regiments. - a LAS from Nicolas Charles Marie Oudinot (1767-1847), Duke of Reggio, General of the Empire, raised to the dignity of Marshal of the Empire in 1809. The letter dated Milan 27 brumaire an 9 on the letterhead of the General Staff of the Army of Italy. It is addressed to the Minister Extraordinary of the French Republic to the Cisalpine government for a matter concerning a man called Planta, a republican, caught up in the turmoil of the restoration of the Cisalpine Republic after the victory at Marengo. General Bonaparte is mentioned by name in the text. Guitry's text is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Napoleon by Draeger, 12 wood-engraved plates from the Épinal imagery, hand-coloured, and numerous black and green illustrations in the text. Traces on the protective glassine, finger mark under Guitry's autograph signature, covers a little rubbed, other minor defects.
