Impressionistic, loosely painted scene on the Dutch coast with a view of the picturesque roofs of the harbour town of Vlissingen. A characteristic work in the style of French open-air painting by Schönleber, who travelled to the Netherlands from 1873 onwards during his years as a student in Munich in order to collect motifs for the paintings he worked on in his studio. Appointed professor at the Karlsruhe School of Art in 1880, he created special depictions of light through new impulses in landscape painting and thus conveyed the new art movement of Impressionism to his students such as Friedrich Kallmorgen.
