Lot no. 112
[Gustave FLAUBERT]. Dr Georges PENNETIER (1836-1923). L.A.S., [Rouen] 28 June 1900, to J. Aubry in Le Havre 2 pages and a quarter in-8, envelope. Flaubert's parrot.
[Georges PENNETIER, a doctor and surgeon from Rouen, was curator of the Rouen Natural History Museum].
He recalls Flaubert's enthusiasm for each of the subjects he dealt with: "When he was writing his Cœur simple, he came to the Museum to ask me for a bird capable of inspiring him, and I can still see him leaving, all happy, with the parrot that became the Holy Spirit. When he was working on the 2nd volume of Bouvard, he was no less preoccupied, asking his friends for the slightest piece of information to which he attached considerable importance, and he showed a childlike joy when he had found, in a well-known writer, a ponderous or prudish phrase worthy of capturing the attention of the heroes of his book"...
