Lot no. 312
Guy de Chabot, baron de JARNAC (1514-1584) gentleman of the chamber of François I, famous for the duel in which he delivered the famous "coup de Jarnac" to La Chataigneraie; he was governor of La Rochelle and mayor of Bordeaux. L.S. "Guy Chabot", Saint-Germain en Laye 2 May 1543, to his father Monsieur de Jarnac 1 fol. page, address on verso (transcription enclosed). Interesting letter to his father, Charles Chabot, captain of La Rochelle. On the King's rising, Marshal d'Annebault came to ask him for news of his father's health, which he said was good... "this is the reason why I have made a request to send you to La Rochelle where Monsieur ladmiral [Philippe Chabot, Admiral de Brion] is convinced that you should go and that you should suddenly write back to the King by post and send him what he needs for his service. And in so doing you will be able to hold him accountable [...] for the despence which you will make there which you cannot carry without being paid your pension which would be much needed to help you marry my sister [Catherine]. Monsieur ladmiral has also told me [...] that you must be careful to wait until he is a little healthier before speaking to the King about your affairs. As for Madame d'Estampes [Anne de Pisseleu, mistress of François I], I am certain that she will be very busy and will do some good. But they dared not bother the King because "news has come that Count Guillaume [of Cleves], who is against us, has ten thousand lansquenetz near Champaigne and the governor of Luxembourg another ten thousand who have come to rally with him. Monsieur de Cleves has lost a number of horses which have been stolen from him"... He adds that his brother will leave in five or six days, "by which you will have ample news". The bishop of Uzès [Jehan II de Saint-Gelais] is "very ill. If he dies, the Abbey of St Maixant belongs to Monsieur de Mande"...
