Lot no. 12
Guy VANDENBRANDEN (1926 - 2014) Geometric composition. Gouache on heavy paper. 70 x 50 cm. Signed and dated on the back 7-87, dry stamp. Note: From 1951, Guy Vandenbranden abandoned figuration for lyrical abstraction. From 1952, he became part of the Brussels art scene and made friends with Pol Bury, Jo Delahaut, Kurt Lewy, Jean Rets and Jean Milo, which led him to join the Art Abstrait group in 1956. Around 1954, he turned to geometric abstraction, which he practised until his death in 2014. Influenced by the American Hard Edge, from 1958 he favoured black and white and quasi-monochrome. From 1961, he experimented with relief and created his first sculptures. At the end of the 1960s, he explored optical effects akin to Op Art, then went on to create monumental works in the 1970s. In 1982, he designed the stained glass window for the Beekkant metro station in Brussels.
